It has been reported long ago that ‘the bottom has fallen out of the market' in ladies thongs and yet many online retailers are reporting an increase in the sale of men's thongs.
Testimony to the increasing popularity of thongs for men is the fact that leading designer labels, such as Calvin Klein Underwear are now selling men's thongs, along with many others.
So, why have they become so popular?
Well, the question ought to be, ‘why did they go out of fashion?', because thousands of years ago they were all the rage and the preferred choice of style by our male ancestors who were wearing thongs long before women.
Charles Darwin would probably answer this question from an evolutionary perspective by applying a process of what is known as ‘reverse engineering', and ask the question, ‘what did adaptive value did thongs hold for our ancestral forefathers back then?'
He would probably have arrived at conclusions that corroborate the reason why men's thongs are now making such a revival and are becoming increasingly popular with today's contemporary modish male.
This would simply be that thongs for men are an incredibly simple, no fuss design that offer the most practical and functional aspects of any style of men's underwear by providing uncompromising support and comfort.
Undoubtedly, our ancestors would have favoured them for these very same practical reasons and have simply worn only what was necessary during a time when resources were scare and practicality and function of many tools and accessories presided above other considerations.
So what gave rise to them going out of fashion? Well, I think the answer to this is easy, vanity and image crept in to society and pushed practicality and function further down the list of considerations when deciding what, when and why we wear what we do.
Most people imagine that very few men now wear thongs, but I think you will be shocked to discover that online retails frequently report that they account for up to 50% of their sales.
Whilst, you don't see what is considered a stereotypical guy stripping off or revealing a glimpse of is thong on TV, they are worn by thousands of men daily. If you are unsure about whether or not to believe this, then visit any retailer of mens underwear and notice a) how many thongs they sell and b) how many top brand names have thong styles in their lines.
I think that one of the main reasons you do not overtly see men in their thongs, for example in the same way that Big Brother female contestant openly parade around in their g-strings, is because men's thongs still hold many misconceptions and stigmas.
How sad is it that society has evolved to create a generation of shallow and narrow minded individuals who place such perceptions on men wearing thongs.
Women are regularly preached to and advised to invest in properly fitting and supportive bras for them selves, and yet for men it seems to be a case of, ‘wear something that supports and protects your testicles, so long as it is not a thong'
Here are ten reasons to wear a thong;
1. They do what they say on the box.
2. Provide exceptional support and ball control
3. They are incredibly comfy
4. Provide a clean line free look under tight fitting clothes
5. Reduce the risk of testicular trauma
6. Avoid uncomfortable and unintended ‘wedgies' common with traditional briefs
7. Are much cooler during warm weather and thus may reduce bacterial or yeast infections in the groin area
8. Smaller to pack away when traveling, easier to wash and quicker to dry.
9. Generally cheaper, because there is less to them
10. Increase sense of autonomy knowing you are wearing something because you choose to and despite others beliefs and values.

My only disagreement is that they are not cheaper becuase they use less material.. i find them to be just as or more expensive than regualr boxers or briefs. Case in point, Fruit of the Loom, totally bottom of the barrel bran here, have 5 pack thongs that cost $14.99 (or they did at one point) where as i can buy thier 5 pack string bikini or low rise brief for the same price. On the other hand Calvin Klein sells thier thoings for upwards of $19 a piece, were thier briefs are $12 a piece.

I am a straight married male. Have been wearing women's thongs daily for the past year. Many are lace, nylon or a stretchy material in feminine colors such as pink, lilac, etc. The sexier the better. Get most of them from 99 cents stores. If you are pantient and take time to look through the racks, you can find some nice things. From this point of view, they are cheaper than men's underwear.

After reading Alex's comment it makes sense on why he wears them. My boyfriend has told me those same exact reasons that Alex stated. They keep him cool in hot weather and they support his package better than regular underwear. Thongs are great. People who don't want to wear them shouldn't, but don't criticize or make fun of those who do. In high school and college I wore boxers - because that is what girls expected. Although, I really preferred bikini briefs. After college I switched to bikini briefs, which I still wear to work, but mainly I wear thongs. I bought thongs to provide support when running. (Actually, I was running one day and I could tell that this guy running in front of me had a thong on. I figured, why not try it.) I am glad I did. They are the most comfortable underwear I own. I wear them all the time except to work (I stick with my black bikinis for then), but otherwise to the gym, round the house, etc. I was a bit worried at the gym, but I figured no one should be looking at me anyway. Why are thongs comfy: they provide support, you aren't hanging about in them, and they give you coverage where you need it. Boxers are just like wearing diapers. I a 22, and I have been wearing thongs for a while, sice i vas 16. At firt I was afraid people knowing about it, and non of my girlfriends new, justmy last one. She thought it was wierd at the beggning, but then she started liking me in them. She even bought some for me! I wear them because they are comfortable and also because I feel to have the physical shape to look good in them. It is not wierd or gay, its just another undergarment. And in europe they are very popular. I was at a gym in Poland last summer, and I saw 2 guys in the lockeroom wearing them, not hidng at all. I really hate narrowminded cultural aspects, but I ahve to live with them so.. ill keep my thongs to myself!
There is a stigma surrounding blokes wearing thongs and I bet plenty of men would own up to wearing them or wanting to wear them if there wasn't. I decided to try them out of curiosity and bought a few different ones. I found some to be very comfortable and others really uncomfortable. Surprisingly, the briefer they are, the more comfortable they are. G-strings are much better than bulkier thongs and are my underwear of choice now. I still have my boxers for wearing when I think people are likely to see my underwear though! It also takes some bravery to let girlfriends know that you wear g-strings - you don't know what reaction you're going to get! Fortunately my wife likes them so I rarely wear anything else now.
I think that men expect most women to disappear into the distance, or worse still laugh, when they see a guy in a thong. Some probably will but if you love your man his choice of underwear (as long as it's clean!) isn't going to put you off him. Tom always feels good in his thongs and I love seeing him in them. How can you possibly call yourself an independent thinker if you're afraid to clothe yourself? This is like saying "You're gay if you eat bananas." No, I'm sorry. Eating nutrient-dense food is good for you, just like supporting your balls is good for you. Curious people aren't being ostracized here. Smart people are. You are smart if you wear a functional piece of clothing. You are stupid if you don't wear the color yellow because you're afraid it makes you like penises. This is what happens when humans aren't afraid of dying from their environment anymore. And as for the fashionable and sexual aspect of this: I can't believe how women are in complete control of whether or not men can wear thongs. I've been wearing thongs for at least 12 years. I am not a "Small" guy and I found my junk would stretch the material of my boxer briefs and then the underwear would stay in place while the rest would fall through one of the leg holes. I do a lot of bending, lifting, squatting down while working on automobiles so as you squat down or move the wrong way it really hurts and it drives me nuts to have to keep adjusting or feel the drama that goes on down there. I wore a thing. problem solved, but yes you do have to find the right fit just cause you have a small waist doesn't always mean you have small junk and vice versa. thanks for all you manufacturers out there for the unlimited amount of options, now all we have to do is get them to lower their prices. forget about what others think! if your girlfriend doesn't like it find a sexier one! there's plenty out there to choose from.

I wear thongs and find them comfortable. Thongs are great in warm weather, less heat down there... sometimes I wear briefs, very uncomfortable continuious weggies and way to much material covering my ass. Sometimes I think wearing is like an all day long butt crack tickle thongs are great...
I wear all kinds of uw. Thongs when I'm active and boxers when I wanna chill. But for me and my girlfriend, those that choose to wear the thong must be in good shape. Otherwise it gives thongs a bad rep. Also, don't sport the sheer, mesh or other non manly thongs cause it also gives them and those that choose to wear them a bad name. Besides, they just don't support the goods as well as they should. At the gym... I don't give a crap what others think of my underwear choice. I care about my body and what I'm there to do much more than anything else. One last plus for thongs, if you travel as much as I do, they're great for light packing and faster to wash and dry. i think that thongs are great. they are very comfortable and defeat the bunching and riding up, that you get from boxers and briefs. i do agree with Markus on the fact that, you do need to have the body for it. i am never shy about being seen in my thongs, but i'm also not shy about being seen in boxers or even naked. it's completely a personal preferance and no one's opinion should effect your comfort. i have no problem at all stripping down to my thong at the gym before gearing up. yeah, you will get some weird looks, but if you are comfortable in yourself you will just find it amusing. wearing a thong does not make you "less of a man" or gay. my girlfriend likes me in them but i think the key to it, is you gotta be in good shape!

Honestly, a survey I read says about 4% of men "prefer thongs" I would say you can add a percent or two of the male population who might not list them as a first choice but might have a few in the undies drawer to wear underneath jeans, for date night, or just to switch it up.
(In a group conversation a 19 year old college baseball player who is as heterosexual as the Grand Canyon is wide, he said with total no-big-deal confidence, he had three from a three-pack in his drawers drawer and wore one when he felt like it. FULL DISCLOSURE: I am 32, and have to admit that before last year, I would have cracked jokes about it and rolled my eyes. I just don't see what the big deal is really.. If something is different, it tends to be wrong in someone else's eyes.. I've been wearing thongs for about four years now, I first started by being really curious and stealing one of my sister's low-rise thongs from aerie. It was so comfortable! I later took that thong and told her about it and she was actually cool with it. I kinda stole a few panties from her roommates and loved it, so I finally bought some of my own. I usually buy mine from target, tj maxx, or Victoria's secret. Yes, I know it was wrong and probably disgusting to you guys, but I asked before I took and told them after. They were okay with it. I used to be one of those people who thought that guys who wore thongs or gstrings had to be gay or cross dressers. That was until i was curious about male gstrings in the straight community. I have been wearing thongs since the mid 80s and I still don't understand how people can think you are gay if you wear them. I wore the shorts of the early and mid 80s just like everybody else did that were real shorts and not the joke of the shorts that might as well be pants of today and nobody thought anything about it. Well none of those equations are true. I totally endorse all the above reasons for thong wearing. All my girl / woman friends who've had the inestimable pleasure of taking my trousers off all like me in them. (Though they prefer me once I'm out of them of course....) What does seem to be true is that in the current climate it takes a 'real' man to wear a thong and ignore prejudice, whether it's prejudice against the garment or the perceived sexual orientation associated with it.

It is however just possible that there are some who do have a glimmer of interest in thong wearing due to being excited by cross dressing and think a thong is as near as you dare go just now, if that's you don't feel bad about it just enjoy and when you want to go further just keep enjoying. I started wearing thongs as soon as I left home to go to university 20 years ago. Not many guys were wearing them at that time, that's for sure. It was before women really started wearing thongs as mainstream underwear too. I was something of a pioneer! When I went home from uni in the holidays I continued to wear my thongs and told my mother that thongs were what guys were wearing nowadays when she asked. Maybe she thought I was mad, I don't know, but I didn't care.

Thongs are without doubt the most comfortable underwear that I've ever tried. The gay slur really gets up my nose and it's usually made by people who are scared of anything different than what they have been told is masculine.
The more men get onto the web and admit they wear them, the more chances are shops will start to stock them again. I really struggle getting any, apart from ones that have so much material at the back, they're virtually Y-fronts. They should style them on women's thongs, just with a little extra support at the front.

You obviously haven't read the majority of comments on this page, your ignorance clearly states that. I'm going to give it a try for sheer functionality, support & hot weather - boxers/boxer briefs can be extremely uncomfortable. I for one hate having my junk sweating all day long even when I'm wearing shorts and a T-shirt. If you've been to south-eastern U.S. especially, you know how bad the heat + humidity can be - temperatures up to 120 degrees (Just an example.) I don't know how many times during summers or even winters depending on where I'm at I'll bathe & be smelling / looking great and within 2 hours of sweating my ass off LITERALLY it doesnt matter anymore, because I smell like musk and just plain awful (Even with body powder, deoderant, cologne.) So yeah, I'm giving it a try. I'm a straight, married male, and comfortable with my sexuality. I wear thongs. When I was younger I was a bit secretive because I worried about what everyone would think, or more to the point what the girls would think.
Later I found they did not care, or actually liked me running around in a thong. This included being outdoors, when on the beach, swiming or off sailing. It just on the beach made sense.

As peoples attitudes changed and I gained age, maturity and self confidence I started to wear my swim thongs on the public beach. I found most of the response was positive rather than negative.
There will allays be some smart ass red-neck plumbers mate who will say something stupid, and when you first start such negative comments can be hurtful, because you are worrying about what every one else thinks. After a few years I learned to laugh such comments off, remembering the source, someone stupid.
Now I wear a thong swimsuit almost any time I am on the beach. More than 90% of the comments and reaction from women is positive. Most just smile and wave, a few come over and intoduce themselves. A few of the stright laced women sometimes give me a dirty look, but I don't much care for their condescending opinions. Heck, they don't even know me and I don't know them. Mostly the reaction from women is warm and positive, which suits me fine.
If other men don't wear thong swimsuits in public because they are worried someone will think they are gay that's fine too. I get all the women who like them to my self.

A few days ago, I had chafed so bad that I decided something had to be done, so I went to kohls, and bought a five pack of cotton bikini briefs, and some weird gym underwear that I didn't recognize, some stretchy light weight something. I use the gym three days a week, and wear a shirt and tie to work, at a department store. Bikini briefs/thongs are great under jeans, dress pants, gym shorts, etc. Chafing is for the birds! I choose ladies thongs and g-strings in nylon or other "tech" fabric because of the great support and feel. I am definitely straight, married, with children. I do work out, but have put on a bit of a paunch, but the thongs still fit great. I wore loose underware (boxers and jockey) as a teen, and blew out one testicle in a bad hernia because of lack of support. Never again!

Last bit....I am guessing smaller sizes in g-strings and thongs would be best, and most comfortable. I find the small size of bikinis in my preferred brand to be more comfortable than the mediums. I think the look is nicer is a smaller size, as well.

I do not wear my underware in public, what ever the style, therefore, why so many people on here are so hung up about those men wearing thongs I cannot understand. I'm not gay and I am absolutely sure the style of my underwear is not going to make me so - as if the mear changing of the style a gay persons underwear will have any effect on their sexualality. We are living in the 21st century are we not?
I buy my underwear from Figleaves (I only wear thongs - love the support and so comfortable). In the section devoted to Valentines day they have selected "sexy" undies for men and women. The men's section is packed with thongs, the womens has about two pairs.

Women seem to be really going away from thongs - a real shame! My wife always used to wear them but is now more likely to wear some womens short style knickers, despite my protests.

I agree with all these positive reasons to try a thong, and will add one: I'm an average guy with an average, perhaps flatter than average butt. Many briefs are cut as though the average man carries two hams on his backside. Others are cut with less material in the back, but this seems to lead to the back of the briefs riding down as you sit or bend down. Also there that diaper-ish way they sag after wearing. With thongs, you don't have to worry about either of these. They provide great support and keep things in place and in a nice profile, but they don't require constant adjustments and pull-ups.

I am an American guy in the south. 54 years old but in tip top shape. I have always worn unconventional underwear. I always preffered bikini underwear and speedos but very self conscious about it. What do men wish women understood about us guys who do wear thongs? Above any other reason for wearing them, they provide the most comfortable support for our junk because of the way they're designed. Not even a jock with leg straps does as well (indecently, my first jock strap as a teenager many years ago was marketed with a center thong strap -- not leg straps -- hence, jock strap (singular)). My wife is very fussy and particular when choosing a comfortable bra with proper support. I'd bet no women likes the discomfort and pain of binding and grinding because of improper fitting or design. Now imagine that kind of discomfort below the waistline. A properly fitted mens thong provides the best comfort and support over any other type of underwear I've ever worn.

I have been wearing thongs and bikini's for 20 plus years. I find they are the most comfortable but not the cheapest. I work out at the gym 5-6 days a week including swimming laps. I love the support and they are much cooler here in the humidity of Florida. Found some mens briefs in the 80's that were alot like my wifes panties same nylon spandex thin waist band no fly but low cut enough to just pull down front. Had a half dozen pair but when they finally bit the dust I could no longer find them for sale anywhere so I went commando. I just could not go back to mens briefs. At that point I had no underwear and as it was about 15 years ago I can't not recall why but I needed to wear some so I grabbed a pair of my wife's briefs and put them on they were like my old brief but much better. Then came 10 years of fighting with the torcher device known as "boxer briefs". One day a year ago I got tired of searching for mens underwear that were made like womens (a couple are somewhat close at $24 a pair)so I bought several pair of women in various styles. Some were just cut to low but I found a few styles that were unbelievable, so comfortable!
I had passed on thongs thinking they could not possibly be comfortable but a few days ago a picked up a couple. G stings are fabulous my favorite style yet.

Lastly, very strange that so many kids posted. Below 16 years, everyone I know and myself, our parents bought our underwear. Because we had no money and could not drive to the store. And if we did get money, allowance, then it was for video games, toys, or the movies. What kid wants to waste their money on underwear. I've been wearing thongs for 15-20 years now, and everyone who talks about their comfort is dead on... When I get dressed or undressed in the locker room at the gym, yeah, sometimes people look a little weird, but so what? Is it weird that there are sites such as this one here? Why do we look for support groups in order to know that what we may do is considered "normal"? In my perspective, thongs are fine. Most people think thongs are affiliated with women or gay men. However, an article of clothing that states made for men, does not define a man's sexuality as being gay. Now, wearing these "male thongs" for about a year and a half now because of some stupid prank in college I pulled has really enlightened me on the fact, that it's just clothing. Thongs are very comfortable and keep you cool in the summer. Boxers do not do this and briefs are just way too constricting is some areas. Also, some girls even like them on guys, trust me ;). So is this post any different from the others on here? Well, all I can say is I used to be one of those guys who thought thongs were for gay men only, and made fun of some kids in high school because they were ridiculed for wearing them. We do live in a very judgmental world, but I do not believe a man should be judged by the male underwear he chooses to wear. I hope one day every guy who chooses to wear a thong does not have the worries of how everyone else in the world views his sexuality.

I Own quite of few. My girlfriend of 6 years likes them. I see no reason why not to wear them. Especially when it is hot outside way cooler and you don't sweat as much as boxers or briefs. Maybe some of these other guys have some self confidence issues or maybe they are scared of what their friends might think if they saw them, or maybe their mothers still do their laundry. Haha. To each there own. For me My favorite brands are, Malebasics, Clever, JM, GIGO and Papi. If you have a Gordmans in your town they sell Intimo and Papi. Otherwise K-Mart has Joe Boxer ones but I don't think they are as good as any of the brands listed above. At the end of the day BE YOURSELF. Who cares what others think about you. They probably just dislike you because you are brave enough to not follow like a sheep.
